Mooncakes

Introduction⇒ James teases Adelaide with a mooncake.

“Hey there, Mooncakes.”
Adelaide’s tail begins to wag, and she quickly looks up and at James. He sits next to Adelaide, who scoots closer until they’re brushing arms.
“You’re awfully quiet today, Addy. What’s wrong?” James grabs Addy’s shoulder and gently shakes her.
She holds her hands in her lap and gently kicks her feet, letting out a soft whine.

“Just… my mom’s not too happy about the candles and the pentagram and all the stuff we did yesterday.”
“Ah, that…”
“She’s just always sticking her nose in my stuff and bothering me about it.”
“As usual.”
“But you’re not like that. You get it.”
“Yeah- Well, I mean, I think so.”

Adelaide’s returned to her previously slumped position, and it’s awfully quiet now. James sets the tiny crimson box with golden Chinese lettering on his lap. “Got you something, Mooncakes.” Adelaide huffs and watches him open the box. He takes out a golden-brown cake with the same lettering imprinted onto the dough.

Her ears perked up. “Where- When did you get this?”
“Your mom gave it to me before I left.”
Adelaide leaned forwards and sniffed intently, whiskers tickling his neck.
He laughed and covered it. “Wanna split it with me, Mooncakes?”
She whined and pulled back, looking embarrassed. “Yes, but… Just stop calling me that! It’s so embarrassing!”
“We’ll see.”
